GOVERNMENT RESPONSES TO ONLINE DISINFORMATION ACROSS SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

Tuesday 10 May 12:00-13:15 WAT / 13:00 – 14:15 SAST / 14:00 – 15:15 EAT

On Tuesday 10 May, Global Partners Digital, the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria (CHR), Article 19 West Africa, the Collaboration on International ICT Policy in East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) and PROTEGE QV will host a virtual event on government responses to online disinformation in Sub-Saharan Africa. This event will launch LEXOTA, a new interactive tool to help human rights defenders across the region challenge problematic laws and policies against disinformation.

In recent years, we have seen states in Sub-Saharan Africa increasingly respond to disinformation through content-based restrictions and regulations. Many of these responses pose significant risks to individuals’ right to freedom of expression. LEXOTA, a new interactive tool powered by data and insight from a Consortium of civil society organisations, tracks and analyses these laws, policies and other government actions on disinformation, forming a comprehensive analytical resource for those working to defend internet freedom and freedom of expression across the region.
